Imagined Companion is the final piece of my PhD research project at Hasselt University and PXL-MAD School of Arts in Hasselt, Belgium.
It is an artificial heirloom, made to be given away. Each bead represents a year of my life. The same applies to the thread. With every bead, a new knot is added. The piece will thus grow constantly until the end of my life. The thread is meant to stay with me. Conversely, the beads are given as gifts to people who have had a formative influence on me and who have become part of my “jewellery family” over the course of my life.
The necklace is a piece that connects, designed to remember and to be remembered. Interestingly, although I can add a new bead and a new knot every year, the last knot that closes the necklace will have to be tied by someone else.
